Shades of Sweet: the sweet taste of hope

There is nothing more heart-breaking than a child who never got a true chance in life.
The cycle of poverty and deprivation is as vicious as can be and only the very few actually manage to break out of it and make a better future for themselves.
Located in Givat Olga – one of Israel’s most crime infected neighbourhoods, stands a two story building that serves as a safe haven from the hostile environment for many young girls and boys.
From the outside it doesn’t look like much but when we entered we found a warm space, a loving home and people with huge hearts.
Doron Abdi is a young man who was working with youth at risk. Back in 2012 Doron began to learn about the world of social entrepreneurship and he saw a way to make true impact on youth at risk, create a real social change in Israeli society and build a better future for many.
Shades of sweet embodies values such as giving, charity and social responsibility. In shades of sweet, young people between the ages of 15-18 that come from the toughest places in Israeli society at Israel’s social and geographical periphery get a chance. These kids come from the worst backgrounds, most of them had already dropped out of every educational framework and spend their time on the streets.
In Shades of sweet they learn a new skill – how to make chocolate and become chocolatiers. They get paid full salaries for their work and learn other important skills crucial for their occupational suitability in the future, such as: arriving on time, responsibility, perseverance, team work, coping with authority and many more. They are surrounded with a professional team on the chocolate side and a team of social workers and professional youth advisors.
All this support system is built around them whiles working with the sweetest and most fun thing in the world…. Chocolate!
The kids that participate in the program and work at the workshops continue to arrive, some for 3 years already, they take work shifts, train and make chocolate.
Their products are being sold in hotels, restaurants and online. And are yummy! In this month’s box you get try some. 🙂
